All you ever wanted to know....

The Session

I recognize that each client is unique and therefore I carefully design each session to be as individual as the client. That fact is what makes this all so exciting. Although a typical family session will last approximately an hour, I have had some finish up in twenty minutes, and some that need a little more time. There are too many variables to narrow down generalized specifics. I handle each session individually around the immediate circumstances and comfort of the subjects. On average, senior sessions usually last longer than an hour and newborns about three hours. Session fees are $35 and include the planning, the session, and the post processing.

Speaking of comfort

Little ones are typically not interested in picture taking and location shoots allow them a lot of freedom to explore. Keep in mind that most images of younger children are not going to be traditional shots. And they really do better when you’re in the frame with them. Although, I don’t limit the amount of clothing changes, remember your tot does not like to wear clothes, much less change them. Comfort and ease go a long way in keeping them happy.

What you can expect

I will contact you prior to your session to learn more about you, offer suggestions for clothing choices and location ideas, as well as discuss the use of props. I will offer some experienced advice for those of you with little ones and try to learn as much as I can about them. (I’m not above bribery either.)

Outdoor photography is contingent on the weather, the sun, and the sky. Although, I’ve narrowed the best times of the day down, no two days are the same, and I’ve learned that sometimes we have to get creative. Prior to every session, I work on an idea bored, even dragging out the props to see how they may look together. Sometimes I draw off of this, and sometimes I don’t. But I like to go in knowing a little of what to expect. It helps to have a map even if I don’t stay on “route.”

Newborn sessions are best before ten days old and are done in your home. This is good for you because you don’t have to pack up baby and everything we need is at our fingertips. I’ll scour out the best light and set up. I bring a whole assortment of things, so be prepared. The first thing I do is warm the space with a heater (we will all be sweating) and start placing the blankets, wraps and swaddlers on a heating pad. My primary focus is keeping baby happy and warm. While things are heating up, we’ll sort through the various baskets, bowls, crates and boxes, as well as hats, wraps and any other items. Individual “sets” will be prioritized based on your preference, and as time allows, and baby allows, we will get to each one. It’s a slow process, so don’t be alarmed.

No limits

I like to say that by the end of your session you will have at least 25 unique images to choose from. Most of the time there are more and a few times there are less. While I’m shooting, I don’t worry about the numbers. My biggest concern is that very moment and capturing the perfect smile, light, and memory. I will organize the session images, and choose the best and most flattering for final review and editing. Once the images are selected, they will go through the post- process phase to enhance the beauty of the image. Light and color adjustments are first, and I retouch the skin and eyes, but want to keep you recognizable. Vintage effects and Black and White edits are done individually as well for maximum appeal. (Any image in your gallery that is not b&w, can be edited upon request.) My style is soft and simple. I want you to enjoy these photographs as much today as you will in twenty years. Given that fact, I tend to shy away from the “trends” in editing. I’m offering you lifetime memories, not a magazine cover of someone that doesn’t resemble you or your family in any way. With that said I do love a fun-themed shoot and if you’re up for that then I’m game, but only if you’re comfortable with it. Again, this is why we customize the session to your needs.

After the session

I limit sessions, and because of this I’m rarely overbooked, leaving me time to work on your images. Your online gallery is generally ready for viewing and ordering within seven days (most of the time sooner.) Weddings and special events usually take two to three weeks. Should there be a delay, I will keep you posted, and I always update the progress on my facebook page. Unless other arrangements for viewing are made, your online gallery will be available for two weeks. During this time your print order needs to be placed. There may be an archive retrieval fee applied to reload your gallery.

Prints

I use a high-quality professional lab for prints, and offer a wide variety of products at affordable prices. If you don’t see it on the website just ask because I’m sure I can get it.

CYP FAQ

Do you have a studio?

At this time I do not have a studio space, and shoot on-location. Although, mostly outdoors, I will shoot an in-home session (especially at holiday time) and of course, newborns are in-home.

Is there a cancellation fee?

Unless stated or advertised, I do not have a cancellation fee. I reserve the right to institute this policy at any time. Should you need to cancel an appointment, please be courteous and let me know as soon as you can, I can usually fill your spot with some notification. Sessions are limited.

When is payment due?

Session fee is due at time of session. Print orders can be paid online via paypal, or can be paid at pick up. Orders over $200 will require a deposit before placed.

Do you accept credit cards?

At this time I only accept paypal and cash/check.

How long does it take to view the proofs?

Normally, less than a week and your proofs are ready. Weddings or large events may take up to three weeks. If editing and processing are delayed I will let you know.

How long does it take to get orders?

I do my best to submit your order to the professional printing lab within 48 hours. Depending on their turn around it takes about 7-10 days. Holidays may take longer. Once the order is delivered, I examine for accuracy and quality and if it meets my expectations it will be ready for pick up. (FYI, I’ve never had to return a print for any reason) I will notify you and we will arrange a meeting time. The entire process from session to print pick up should take about 4-5 weeks if prints are ordered within a week of being online.

What props do you have?

I have a wide assortment of props, and you can see many of them by visiting my website and/or facebook page. I’m working on an inventory album, but in the meantime that’s the best place to go to get ideas.

What advice do you have for upcoming photographers?

Too much to mention. If you’re aspiring to be a photographer, I’d be more than happy to share some experiences and knowledge with you. I’m not exactly seasoned and I still find myself learning every day, but I will do my best to steer you in the right direction.

Hey blog world!!! I've been MIA, but such is life. I don't have the time or energy to recreate every session in the last couple of months, but here is a good rundown.

Had a wedding reception after a Las Vegas Eloping and a Wedding on the hottest day in the history of the world. (Well that could be an exaggeration, but it was super hot)

Katelyn

I'm forgoing my normal my blog style because there is just too much to say.

First of all, in the short time I've been doing photography, I have been amazed by the power of relationships, the various stages of life, and the beauty on the other side of the lens. The simple exchange of love between a newly married couple, or the pucker of a brand new baby, or the playful resistance between a brother and sister, it goes without saying how wonderful being a part of those moments truly is. With that said, yesterday I was afforded an opportunity to capture life in it's most crucial, resilient phase. I may never have a session that centers around the importance of the moment as much as Katelyn's did.

Let me formally introduce you to my new hero. Katelyn is 13, and will be in the eighth grade. She likes boys, and xbox. She's a normal teenager, with normal hopes, normal dreams. It's hard to look at a child and think of them as strong, and brave but that is exactly what I see - a fighter.

Katelyn's life changed a few months ago when she was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer called Osteosarcoma. It was only by incident that the cancer, known as the silent killer, was detected ( a miracle actually.) As a mother, I can only imagine how heartbreaking that news must be. The past few months have been the hardest of both Erica and Katelyn's life but neither of them seem to have a broken spirit. The doctor's appointments, chemo, and constant medical treatment have been overwhelming for them to say the least but each day brings about a new blessing for them, and I truly feel that is why they keep going on. They are embarking on this journey and taking each day as both a blessing and an opportunity. Erica told me that prayers were answered daily, and she could see God's work unveiling little by little. Mercy in motion. That's incredibly powerful.

Katelyn's mom wanted this session to be about the adversity they are facing and that they are sure to overcome. In a few year's when they've beat this, they can reflect on this road with gratitude, and peace, and always remember how precious, and beautiful life truly is. Most people don't really forget things such as fighting cancer, but just like weddings, and all the other milestones of life, sometimes we need a visual reminder to allow us the opportunity to relive that one moment. These images represent so much: life, love, mercy, strength, grace, courage, and beauty.

Katelyn is an incredibly beautiful young lady, even on her worst days, she is vibrant like a new rose with gorgeous, captivating eyes, and a beautiful lively smile. I fell in love with her, and I hope she knows how much she has changed my life. I ask each of my readers to keep her, and her family in your prayers as she continues on this journey. She has more chemo, and a 10 hour surgery to face in the next little bit and you support and prayers would make a huge difference.

In a word: Unexpected

The experience: Hmmmm....Well this was my very first maternity session, and it actually went better than I ever expected. I had been planning this for months just waiting for Shawna's belly to grow. Shawna is my BFF of sorts and she understands my specific brand of crazy and I was thrilled to have her be my first belly. So she got to freeze in the river, and I got goose poop on my hand. I'd call that pretty even. I left the flash at home because who needs flash outdoors? Well people who try to take pictures in the thick of woods with tree cover blocking all signs of sunlight, that's who.

Memphis and Liam

In a word: Go!

The experience: Memphis and Liam are no strangers to CYP. In fact, besides Lily, these guys were my practice subjects, even before this became what it is. They’ve endured endless torture on the other side of my lens. They’re my cousins babies, and they are absolutely precious. It seems that though any ability, natural talent, or hope that I have as a photographer goes out the window when these two are around. They’re always on the go and I have about 200 pictures of the back of their head, or a blur coming by me. Amy assures me that it’s not just me and that they treat all photographers equally. Haha!!!!! Nonetheless, we always have fun and I’m always a little more appreciative of mom’s with little boys. There is never a dull moment in the Marlow house and I’m witness to that. I told Amy that maybe when they were in their 20s we could actually get them to sit by each other, and be still for just a second.

Rock a bye baby!

In a word: Unexpected

The experience: Statistically, like most things in life, not every session will go flawlessly. Most of the time a normal session will have a few small hiccups, but you can depend on that and as a photographer, we’ve learned to circumvent the normal problems that we face. However, this session falls into a different category altogether. Haha! But it’s okay. Little Marcus is new to the world, and unfortunately he’s not adjusting to baby life as well as we wish he would. Marcus is colicky, so he has a few bad days every now and then. Unfortunately, this was one of those days. He preferred the safety of his momma’s arms over my baskets, boxes, and crates. I can sympathize with that, there are days I'd rather relax in the comfort of my bed and favorite quilt than actually work. Plus it was scorching hot and miserable, even the happiest baby would have been irritated by the heat. He did give me the benefit of about ten shots, and those ten were pretty awesome. His big brother and sister were so cute trying to calm him and hold him. They constantly checked in on him to make sure he was okay. He is a complete doll and I fell in love with his wavy black hair. Since the day didn’t go as planned, I hope to see this little feller again soon.

Family Time

In a word: Together

The experience: This family is pretty special to me. We've gone to church together for a couple of years now, and I’ve taught their kids in Sunday school. Let me just say that our church is really awesome. We’re a small group and as country as cornbread, but we worship God and couldn’t be a closer group. I count each and every one there as close friends and these guys aren’t any different. If you are looking for a church to go to, or are interested in coming to be a part of us, we’d love to have you. The church is New Freedom Baptist and we are located on Duff Road, about 7 miles North of Lafollette.

Marie and Brandon are some of the greatest people I know, and Molly and Sam, well you can see how special they are. Molly is a real animal lover, and always equipped with some wonderful accessories that she loves to show off. Sam is newly one year old, and just beginning to walk. He is one of the most loving babies, and he always “sugars” on me at church. I find it enjoyable to watch these kids grow. They become a part of you when you see them regularly and I know that my life has been touched by just knowing them. I enjoyed spending the morning with you guys and hope you enjoy your beautiful images.

Connor

In a word: Friend

The experience: This was a quick session! Probably less than fifteen minutes, but each second was action packed with fun. Connor is such a cool guy, and he certainly entertained me, and schooled me quite a bit on all things trains. Connor's mom is hosting a walkathon for Open Doors of East Tennessee in honor of her son. The Babies

In a word: ohhhhh.........

The experience: Okay, these babies are really special to me. First of all they're cousins and they were born on the same day. If that isn't cool enough, they both have rockstar hair. I'm in love with both of them, and I spent more time snuggling with them than actually photographing them. They have very special mommies, that I call friends. These babies are complete miracles, and bring so much hope to their family. But that's how God works, isn't it. Sends hope to us in the smallest packages?

I hope you dance!

JMS Formal

In one word: Nervous

The experience: I can remember middle school like it was yesterday. I was awkward, goofy, and completely uncomfortable in my own skin. Couple that with dancing and well.... you can get the idea. Although we wore jeans to our eight grade dance and we spent most of the time talking about the boys instead of dancing with them, it was one of my favorite memories. And my best friend in 8th grade is still my best friend today! I have to admit these girls were beautiful and poised and the complete opposite of how I seemed at their age. It seemed that all the kids were a bit anxious, nervous and excited all rolled into one, for a split second I remembered that familiar unease that came with adolescence. It was a wonderful opportunity to capture their special evening, and I hope that Haley and Kaitlyn felt as beautiful as they looked. They are two wonderful young ladies and their parents should be very proud.
